please wait...Translate to EnglishI've got a small piece to write about today about a district called Bagerhat. It used to be a sub-division before becoming a new district. It's an old city with schools and colleges that are over 100 years old. Lots of British structures are there too, boasting old glory. The city has significant historical sites like the Sixty Dome Mosque and the mausoleum of Khan Jahan Ali (RA). Everything that a rural city needs is in this small place. Narrow roads, few cars, easy bikes, and rickshaws are a common sight here. Development is very limited here. In the cold mornings, people enjoy morning walks, tea, and hanging out, which I've been seeing for the last 40-50 years. It's a small, quiet city.
In this city, existed the country's only narrow-gauge train. It used to run from Rupsa East station to Bagerhat. Information suggests that 6 custom narrow-gauge loco trains were used in this section. Currently, 3 of these locos are preserved in different areas - Pakshi, C.R.B., and Saiyadpur. This 32.95 km section used to have 10 stations (Khulna Rupsa Ghat, Rupsa East, Karnapur, Samanta Sena, Bahir Dia, Mulghar, Khan Jahan Pur, Yatripur, Shat Gambuj Road, Bagerhat College, and Bagerhat). 6 pairs of trains ran on this section all day, 4 locals and 2 expresses (Banani and Shat Gambuj). Earlier, steam loco locos were used. Diesel locos were introduced in 1980. 70** series locos ran on this section. There were 3 locos in this section, 2 in operation, and one at the Rupsa East loco shed. Hungarian locos used to be in this section initially. There was a jetty at Rupsa East station for unloading rail equipment. Luna Bhai worked in this section.
Up until 1968, this section had narrow-gauge trains. In 1969, it was converted to broad-gauge. It's good to note that this 32.95 km section was entirely separate, not connected to any other section. In the late 90s, this section was closed. In 2011, all tracks, station buildings/platforms were sold. Save for the platform at Bagerhat station, nothing else remains. The Mayor cleaned and repaired the railway path from Bagerhat station to Bagerhat college, filling potholes with mud, to be constructed later with concrete.
Hopefully, the residents of this area will hear the clink-clank of trains again as they come back to their beloved city! ---- Written by Mohammad Nazmul Islam, Residence - Dhaka, Bangladesh
