These kind of unnecessary name changes of stations are just Political gimics of government or political parties to use local people centiments in votebanks. And this tradition is comming on in India for long and done earlier also by other political parties. I think the names of stations should be done in such a manner so that people from all over India can identify and well known to them not only names which only local people know because Railway stations are used not only by local people but also by people from all over India. Say for eg: recently there was a name change of Mughalsarai to Pt Deendayal upadhyay stn. Now Mughalsarai is a well known and popular name easily identifyable name among people of India. But by giving Pt Deendayal upadhyay name to this station except local passengers no other peoples can identify it easily it. And...
more... even passengers still call it Mughalsarai instead of pt pt Deendayal upadhyay stn, so it was a useless decision taken only wasting money. Same with MGR Cennai Central, Netaji subhash chandra bose Gomoh, etc and also same with many metro stations in Kolkata which was earlier named as Uttam kumar Tollygaunge by other parties also. Many other examples are there. Passengers still call these stations comfortably by their original names like Mughalsarai, Gomoh, Chennai Central, Tollygaunge, etc as these names r easily identifyable by local as well as other passengers of all over India.
Also i don't know if 1 passenger goes to buy tickets at ticket counter and says that " give me 1 pt Deendayal upadhyay " is that increasing the respect of that famour person? No it it not. Is Pt Deendayal upadhyay, MGR, Netaji, Uttam Kumar, etc are saleable? Haha just Political gimics to brainwash local sentiments and earn local votes nothing else. Also looking at present financial situation of IR now this name change additional money wastage was not at all required but vote bank is 1st na.
