The Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) used to operate trains on this track during the colonial era, but this route was neglected after the nationalization of the railways in 1952. The Shakuntala Railway was established in 1910 by a private British company, Killick-Nixon. The 190-km journey between Yavatmal and Achalpur in Amravati district takes approximately 20 hours by rail. The railway line was operational for over 70 years from 1923, with the original engine being replaced by a diesel motor on 15 April 1994. The narrow gauge railway aimed to transport cotton from Yavatmal to Mumbai (Bombay) for shipment to Manchester, England.
