Jaipur, Agra, Lucknow got big status with metros. It’s all pride, no profit or passengers

Jaipur Metro, once a symbol of pride, is now struggling financially due to low ridership. Despite being operational for nearly a decade, it only connects 12 km and serves a population of 4 million with an average daily ridership of 50,000. The system's expansion has stalled, and even desperate attempts like...

offering train rentals for parties haven't helped. Many Indian tier-2 cities, like Agra, are pushing ahead with metro projects despite experts' warnings that they are not suitable for cities with low population density. A Parliamentary Standing Committee report highlighted the financial losses incurred by most metro networks, yet funding for these projects continues. This raises questions about the effectiveness of metro projects in smaller cities, especially when alternative transportation solutions might be more viable.

Jaipur Metro, pehle ek gaurav ka pratik tha, ab kam ridership ke wajah se financial struggle kar raha hai. Lagbhag ek decade se chal raha hai, lekin sirf 12 km connect karta hai aur 4 million ki population ko serve karta hai, average daily ridership sirf 50,000 hai. System ka...

expansion ruk gaya hai, aur parties ke liye train rent karne jaise desperate attempts bhi kamyaab nahi hue. Aise bahut saare tier-2 cities hai, jaise Agra, jo metro projects pe aage badh rahe hai, despite experts' warnings ki yeh low population density wale cities ke liye suitable nahi hai. Ek Parliamentary Standing Committee report ne highlight kiya ki zyadatar metro networks financial losses mein hain, phir bhi in projects ke liye funding continue hai. Isse question arise hota hai ki kya smaller cities mein metro projects effective hai, especially jab alternative transportation solutions more viable ho sakte hain.

Delhi metro connectivity beats rest of all by miles. Will take more than 10 years for all together to stand in it's comparison

Rightly so , The metro railway was not required in Jaipur till 2025 .
However , the major problem with jaipur metro is the route of current metro and it's frequency.

Also , the proposal of extension of the metro to ambabari on one side and sitapura on the other has been shelved by previous governments due to lack of

funds and other pretexts since 2017.
On ground , this holds immense potential, as many private minibuses and vans carry college students, workers and labour force from different parts of the city to sitapura industrial area (RIICO) (many factories , educational institutions are located here) via sanganer , tonk road and Pratap nagar .

Hopefully, if the current government prioritised this extension work and it sees light of the day , it would boost the ridership in long run , plus reduce reliance on private transport operators .
