It is believed that he was supposed to deliver the gold to a local businessman in Gorakhpur. The team is questioning the smuggler about the larger network involved. In March, the DRI, in a joint operation, recovered 12 kg of gold from Gorakhpur. The gold was being smuggled from Myanmar and was destined for a businessman in Delhi. The team apprehended two smugglers in Gorakhpur, who were traveling from Muzaffarpur to Delhi in a luxury car. They were caught on the Kasya-Gorakhpur route. The seized gold was valued at Rs 8 crore. In December, the DRI arrested three smugglers and recovered five kilograms of gold from them. The seized gold was worth about Rs 4 crore in the market. In March of the previous year, the DRI team apprehended a young man from the Taramandal area with Rs 40 lakh in cash. These smugglers used to bring smuggled gold from Kolkata and sell it in the Hindi market. The profit margin on smuggled gold is about Rs 10 lakh per kilogram. According to experts, a kilogram of gold costs around Rs 66 lakh, and a 17% tax is levied on it. This means that a jeweler can earn up to Rs 10 lakh on a kilogram of gold. Even after deducting the expenses of other distributions in the entire operation, a profit of Rs 6 to Rs 7 lakh is made.
