For example, in Vande Bharat Express trains, two specially designed seats (Seat No 40) in coach C1 and C7 (for eight car trains) or C1 and C14 (for 16 car trains) are reserved for PWDs, along with one adjacent seat for their escorts. To ensure proper utilization of the quota, online booking is only permitted for PWDs holding a Unique Identity Card issued by Indian Railways. At reservation counters, PWDs need to present either the Unique Identity Card or a copy of their concessional certificate. The Center for Railway Information Systems has been tasked with updating reservation software to verify the Unique Identity Card of PWDs. In case both designated seats for PWDs in Vande Bharat trains are booked, but the escort seats remain vacant, the vacant seats will be allocated to PWDs. Notably, before these revised guidelines, PWDs were only eligible for quota benefits in trains offering concessional fares. The ministry has not yet decided on restoring travel concessions for senior citizens and other categories that were discontinued during the pandemic.
