Centre’s curbs on KIIFB borrowing delays State approval for Sabari rail project

The ambitious Angamaly-Erumely Sabari rail project in Kerala is facing delays due to financial constraints. The Kerala government is unable to commit to its 50% share of the project cost due to restrictions on the KIIFB's borrowing limit imposed by the Union government. The project, originally planned with a 50:50 cost-sharing...

between Railways and Kerala, has been put on hold as the State faces financial difficulties and Railways remain undecided between the Angamaly-Erumely project and an alternative elevated railway corridor from Chengannur to Pampa. The final survey report for the Chengannur-Pampa proposal is still pending. The Angamaly-Erumely project, originally estimated at ₹550 crore in 1997-98, now costs ₹3,801 crore due to revisions. A portion of the project, including an 8km railway line, a bridge over the Periyar, and a station at Kalady, has already been completed at a cost of ₹264 crore. The Angamaly-Erumely project holds the potential to connect 14 towns in eastern Kerala to the rail network, serving as a third line between central Kerala and Thiruvananthapuram. It can also be extended to the Vizhinjam port. The Chengannur-Pampa project, on the other hand, would only benefit seasonal pilgrims to Sabarimala.

Chengannur-Pampa project ka final survey report abhi tak submit nahi hua hai. Angamaly-Erumely project, jo ki 1997-98 mein ₹550 crore ka tha, ab revised estimate ke mutabik ₹3,801 crore ka hai. Project ka ek hissa, jisme 8km railway line, Periyar pe bridge aur Kalady station bhi hai, ₹264 crore mein pura ho chuka hai. Angamaly-Erumely project se eastern Kerala ke 14 towns rail network se connect ho jayenge, aur central Kerala aur Thiruvananthapuram ke beech third line ka kaam karega. Isko Vizhinjam port tak extend bhi kiya ja sakta hai. Dusri taraf, Chengannur-Pampa project se sirf Sabarimala jaane wale seasonal pilgrims ko hi fayda hoga.
