The Kanchanjunga Express runs between Silchar (Assam) and Sealdah (Kolkata) and was en route to Sealdah when the collision occurred. Rescue operations were immediately initiated, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw coordinating efforts between the Railways, NDRF, and SDRF. A control desk was established at Rangapani station, and a wagon from the Kanchanjunga Express was left suspended in the air.
