The project was initially announced in February 2016 with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Chhattisgarh government and the Ministry of Railways. The Chhattisgarh Railway Corporation Limited was established in December 2016 to oversee the project's implementation. The project was formally inaugurated by the then Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in October 2018, just before the state assembly elections. However, after the Congress government came to power in the state, the project was stalled. With the BJP's return to power, the state government has now deposited its share of funds, paving the way for the project to resume. The project spans 294.59 kilometers and will include 25 stations, with major stops at Katghora, Ratanpur, Mungeli, Kawardha, and Khairagarh. The estimated land requirement for the project is 1,794 hectares.
