*** 22685 YPR-CDG Karnataka Sampark Kranti jumps over Chambal River between Hetampur and Gher, just prior to Dholpur, led by 22680 BSL WAP-4. ***
.
Chambal River is a tributary of Yamuna River. The 960 kilometres long Chambal River originates from the Singar Chouri peak on the northern slopes of the Vindhyas, 15 kilometres West-South-West of Mhow in Madhya Pradesh state, at an elevation of about 843 metres (2,766 ft). The river flows first in a northerly direction through Madhya Pradesh for about 346 kilometres and then in a generally north-easterly

direction for 225 kilometres through Rajasthan. The Chambal flows for another 217 kilometres between M.P. and Rajasthan and a further 145 kilometres between M.P. and Uttar Pradesh. It enters U.P. and flows for about 32 kilometres before joining the Yamuna River in Jalaun District at an elevation of 122 metres , to form a part of the greater Gangetic drainage system. In the nearby Dholpur there lies Chambal National Sanctuary which is an ecological as well as a tourist hotspot. Numerous dams have been constructed all along its length which had proved to be a boon to the dry areas through which the river passes.
.
The legendary river is mentioned in ancient scriptures. The Chambal River is utilized for hydro power generation at Gandhi Sagar dam, Rana Pratap Sagar dam and Jawahar Sagar Dam.
.
The Chambal ravine has harboured dacoits for centuries. One of the famous dacoits was Phoolan Devi, who terrorized the entire Chambal valley. The entire Chambal stretch starting from Dholpur in Rajasthan and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh comes under high alert zone due to dacoits looting passengers.
