Great Great Great Great Great Great:write-up. Great:Playing with saloon and alcos 😂 Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great
DADN-KYQ Express, NR/LKO ka Aatank.

So, for some urgent work, I had to return home to Varanasi from Lucknow. The original plan was to return via Ekatmata Express, but due to some unforeseen circumstances with my Thar, I had to return back from midway to the station.

So,
...

another hour, another plan. The 19305, DADN-KYQ Express suited me the best, so I booked the tickets in current availability. Hopped on an Uber and that was the fastest commute in my entire journey, reached Charbagh from Ekana in just over 20 minutes.

The train was on time till Kanpur, and as soon as it entered NR, it instantly got late. Still, I hoped the delay would not exceed 45 minutes. But the great NR/LKO. They were playing with a GM saloon and two ALCos on the PF-2 where the train was supposed to be received.

Shaheed Express was taken on the vacant PF-3 first, and when the ALCos finally got done with the parking simulator, Bagh Express was received on PF-2. And while it was a pleasant surprise to see coach display indicators on LKO, they were working with a mind of their own. Data of my still nowhere to be seen train was displayed while Bagh was on PF-2. And that of Shaheed started being displayed after it's departure.

Finally, after a delay of 1.5 hours, the train arrived on PF-3 and departed after accumulating a few more minutes of delay. But here comes something I hadn't expected from NR/LKO even in my dreams. The train reached SLN in around 1hr 20min, averaging more than 100kmph. And covered SLN-JOP in around 50 minutes, again an average of 100kmph. Now I was sure, we'd reach Varanasi before 11:30.

And then started typical NR behavior. The train was halted at every station to let the freights gain some progress, even though we were still late, officially. And finally the train was halted at Babatpur because operational block was taken. A totally avoidable situation, had they run the train on the schedule it was running.

The train halted there for almost an hour. Another block was scheduled if the previous one didn't work (they were welding the tracks), and exactly the same thing happened. But somehow we were allowed to proceed, supposedly because the train was full of people appearing for some exam, and they got agitated. The train was halted yet again at Shivpur and Varanasi outers.

At this point I was so annoyed, I deboarded and started walking towards the station. I boarded back when the train started crawling towards the station. Finally it reached BSB around 2 hours late. ½ hour of gained delay, even with a track-burning run, and a heavy slack in last 50km.

You can trust a wolf to guard the sheep, but can't trust NR to reach somewhere on time. Attached here are some pictures I took while waiting for my train. Well, except for the train I was traveling in.

P.S. Farakka is still displayed as MLDT-NDLS at BSB. And while the train boards are still printed and handwritten, CDO/KIR has taken extra steps to paint ER again wherever it had been peeled off. They're surely reading some blogs here.

Kumud.

_/\_:There's a reason I despise NR!
I am surprised you found a seat in such a long running train at the last moment. Otherwise the morning alternative would have been LKO-BSB ICE via PBH. I think the exam you are referring to is/was the police recruitment exam. Even special trains were run for it.

I have my own story of NR apathy, it made my co passenger miss his connecting Gorakhdham Express from LKO back in the day. Basically, it took LESS time for Himgiri to cover SLN-Utratia section than it took to cover the last 12 kms
...
[It stopped 4 times during the last some kms before LKO]. My co passenger went from being beaming happy to being slightly sad to being dejected. He couldn't even have got off the train because every fifteen mins or so, the train started, giving hope before ultimately stopping in the middle of nowhere. This was ~5/6 Years back, apparently nothing has changed at NR.

I checked the availabilities the last day and it showed heavy WLs. But in the midnight, even SL has seats in current availability. I was going for the ICE, but huge slacks and early arrival at BSB made me consider the weekly. Yeah, most probably it was the police recruitment exam, too, because that much crowd won't be there for UGC-NET.

Utraitia-LKO stretch has become a bit less problematic in recent days as I've experienced in multiple trains. But NR still messes up somewhere in the end. Something exactly like your story
...

happened with me, too. Because even though I was coming back home, the trip ended up as wasted time and wasted money.

They were stopping the train at every second station after JOP, so I thought Babatpur would be the same story. But they stretched the unscheduled maintenance block, and when people started to deboard there (it's the airport, so connectivity is pretty good), an announcement was made that the train was going to depart. Only to make 3 more halts of almost an hour in the last 15km or so.

Needless to say, I took a UPSRTC volvo back to Lucknow.

Agree
The exam crowd would have been too much for the small morning rake of LKO-BSB to handle. I once traveled via it and only if someone goes in as soon as the train comes, is a window or even proper seat possible. There isn't any 2S reservation so it's either the CC or unreserved.

How far is the actual airport from Babatpur rail station and if someone finds themselves at Babatpur, is connectivity to BSB main station/Cantt possible?
...

Lucknow and Varanasi are fantastically connected by trains but some trains are ruined by slack [like Gunga Sutlej], some by being delayed [especially the Intercity ones] and atleast the VB by having an off choice terminal in form of Gomti Nagar.

I've never traveled in the morning ICE. Only traveled once in the CC of the evening one which has now been extended to BSBS. It was hauled by LKO ALCos back then, and they failed at RBL. Reached BSB at 4 hours late.

I think the best train between BSB-LKO is the shuttle, convenient timings, most of the times you can get seats in any class, even the GS. Usually on time and travel time just 5 minutes more than Rajdhani, the fastest train on this route.
...

I don't think spending an hour more and almost ₹1400 for the CC or ₹2100 for the EC in VB is a wise choice, especially if you don't want all those bells and whistles. My flat is near Phoenix Palassio and still I find GTNR inconvenient.

The NH-56 is on one end of the runway and the Babatpur station is on the other end. So almost 3-4 kms. Usually cabs available on the airport agree to pick you up on the station. And there are autos available, too. But usually they are there only when a train is scheduled. So, I won't recommend getting off at Babatpur. It's better to wait for the train to move, because it'll take almost the same time as 20km of highway and 3-4km of city traffic.
