It will also help in the extension of trains plying on the Palakkad—Pollachi section to the Palakkad Junction station from the town station. Moreover, it will also help long distance commuters to board and alight from the direct entry “Platform one” which till now was used only for passenger trains.
The commuters will not have to depend on overbridges and escalators. Initially trains to and from Chennai will be accommodated at the direct entry Platform No 1 which will be 600 metres long capable of accommodating 26 coach trains, said Railway officials.
As the modernization of the signaling system is completed, the station master can receive or dispatch trains through fully computerized visual display units with the click of a mouse. Railway officials said that the prevailing system of route relay interlocking (RRI) will be changed to electronic interlocking system. They said that the Palakkad junction will be the first in the Southern Railway to have two visual display units (one as stand by) in place of RRI panel to signal train movement.
