When at or near Birur, don't miss the chance to eat at Preethi Canteen. It is quite famous amongst people travelling to Shivamogga or Chikkamagaluru, even if it means a little detour. So when you go to Birur try it, as it is just 1 Km away from the station.
.
The famous items are many like Benne Khali Dose (40rs) (Butter Empty Dose).
But...
more... to me the best was the Rava Idly (Idly made from semolina), which is cooked perfectly with garnishing of grated carrot, coriander and green chillies served with chutney and sagu (vegetable kurma). It costs 30rs.
Then there are other items like Khara Bath and Kesari Bath (Hot and Sweet dish made from semolina) available only in the morning.
But the item which really stands out and that I saw being ordered by all is Mosaru vade - Vade soaked in Yoghurt (Hindi - Dahi Vada). It has a Urad Dal vade soaked in thick creamy curd, on top of which grated carrot, coriander and green chilli is added and then at last Khara boondi (spicy boondi - fried) is added. The mixture of soft creamy soaked Vade with crunchy boondi is a delight.
Then finally try the filter coffee. Being in coffee land (Chikkamagaluru district), you need to have it here.
.
The cost is a bit high. Mosaru vade is 30rs. Coffee 12 rs.
The hotel doesn't have the standing tables like in big city fast food hotels, so just seating. People wait for it to open, so, heavy rush for the seat.
If you are travelling by car, then just park outside and wait, they will serve you in the car itself.
Timings: 7:30-12:30 and then 4:30 to 8pm. Thursday Holiday.
From station, its just 1 Km away, you can walk or take an auto. Come out of the station, walk towards the only circle of the town and take another left and walk on NH-206, you will get the place on the left. Or just ask around, everyone knows and will guide you.
