The station is located in a town called Tadepalli, sandwiched between the city of Vijayawada, the Mangalagiri town and Amaravati, the Capital City of Andhra Pradesh. Tadepalli has a population of about 1 lakh according to 2011 census and an area of 61.76 sq. km. The town is famous for Undavalli Caves, the rock cut cave temple that is the abode of Shri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy (Lord Vishnu with a lotus emerged from His navel. Lord Brahma takes birth from the lotus.) carved out a single rock. The caves are at a distance of 4km from the station. The name of the station comes from the Buckingham Canal that passes through the town. This canal supplies the waters of River Krishna to Chennai. There's an abandoned boat yard in the town from where steamers used to ply to Ongole.
