Vinod Rathod: I have quit Bollywood’cos the quality of music being produced doesn’t appeal to me,
Around this time in the 90’s singer Vinod Rathod was on top of his game singing one chartbuster after another — Kitabein Bahut Si (SRK’s Baazigar), Nayak Nahi Khalnayak Hoon Main (Sanjay Dutt’s Khal Nayak), Maine Paidal Se Ja Raha Tha (Govinda’s Hero No 1) Yaara O Yaara (Salman Khan — Sunny Deol-starrer Jeet) Doli Taro Dhol Baje (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam), Chalak Chalak (SRK’s Devdas)... the list goes on. But it’s been a few years since he last sang for a Bollywood song. Prod him about why we don’t get to hear him anymore in Bollywood, and he retorts, “Can you name me any...
more... recent Bollywood movie whose songs you can incessantly croon throughout the day? You can’t. That is why I have quit Bollywood. The quality of music that is being produced today doesn’t appeal to me.”
He thinks blame for the deteriorating standards of music in Bollywood lies “not with the music directors” but the quality of cinema being made. “Filmi music is situational and needs to be in sync with the script and
story of the movie. If you are making a movie like Devdas, songs like Chalak Chalak will automatically be penned down. But today who’s making musicals. I am also a very sentimental person and after the demise of musical greats like Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and RD Burman, I lost interest in Bollywood music industry,” explains the 55-year-old who believes his reclusive ways have been misunderstood by filmmakers. “For me, music is everything. Its sadhana. I can’t take music for granted. I must riyaaz regularly. So I don’t socialise much because of which people misunderstand me. But that’s how I am.” The singer are serious reservations about social media as well. “I have intentionally shut myself off the digital world of distraction. You won’t find me in any of the social media platforms, nor do I attend calls. With the rise of social media, there is a constant need for musicians to stay in touch with their fans. As a result, the time allotted for riyaaz is cut short. I won’t say there’s no talent out there, but it’s going to waste due to such distractions,” says the Aisi Deewangi singer. Rathore however, is all set to make a come back soon. “I am working on an album which will be released soon. It has been written, composed and sung by me. It has turned out great, and I am sure the audience will like it,” he says adding, “I do what I enjoy and suits my taste. I don’t do something because I am expected to do it.”
