Kolkata, connecting Howrah Maidan and Esplanade. This project, completed by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the historic city of Kolkata. The 10.8 km long underground section and the 5.75 km long section on the bridge will make Kolkata the first city in India with an underwater metro system, joining the ranks of countries like England and France. The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade metro section, which spans 4.8 km, consists of two tunnels under the Hooghly River, making Howrah the deepest metro station in India once operations begin.
