Subsequently, a route via Dhanbad for the Ranchi-Howrah Shatabdi Express was planned, with a timetable even being drafted, but the train was ultimately routed through Purulia-Tatanagar instead. The Ranchi-Patna Vande Bharat followed a similar pattern. Dhanbad has also lost some older trains, including the Ranchi-New Jalpaiguri train via Katihar, the Ranchi-Howrah Intercity running thrice weekly, and the Dhanbad-Bhubaneswar Garib Rath train, replaced by a costlier Dhanbad-Bhubaneswar special train. The city has been demanding a direct train to Delhi for two decades but has not yet received one despite repeated promises from various governments and parliamentary committees.
