Residents of Kolhan, particularly Mithila people, have been demanding a Tatanagar-Jaynagar or Darbhanga train for two decades, even writing numerous letters to the railway. A survey was conducted to explore the possibility of rerouting the Puri-Darbhanga Express from Kharagpur to Adra via Tatanagar-Chandil. However, the railway rejected the proposal citing increased travel time. Meanwhile, Mithila residents in Jamshedpur and Adityapur are holding regular meetings, accusing the railway of neglecting Darbhanga, Madhubani, Saharsa, and Jaynagar. The distance between Katihar and Jaynagar is 373 km, which could take nine hours to cover, potentially inconveniencing travelers between Tatanagar and Katihar. According to the All Faith Harmony Committee's Jyoti Mishra, the railway should operate a new train between Tatanagar and Jaynagar as per the operational schedule released in September 2023. Extending the Tatanagar-Katihar Express to Jaynagar will result in longer travel times for residents of other districts in Bihar. Experts suggest that a new train for Jaynagar might be launched after the operation of Holi and summer special trains from Tatanagar is stopped.
