The project initially consisted of two routes, Automotive Square to MIHAN Metro Depot and Prajapati Nagar to Lokmanya Nagar, with a total length of 42 km and 36 stations. To optimize costs and ensure an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) above 8%, the route alignment was revised, eliminating the original passage through Khamla Road and Airport Area. The final DPR was submitted in November 2013 and approved by the central cabinet in August 2014. Phase 2 of the project, estimated at Rs 6,708 crore, has been approved by the state government, but the DPR is pending.

Limited (MAHA-METRO) naam ke ek Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) ke dwara chalaya gaya hai, jismein Indian aur Maharashtra state governments ki 50:50 equity hai. Project mein shuru mein do routes the, Automotive Square se MIHAN Metro Depot tak aur Prajapati Nagar se Lokmanya Nagar tak, jinki kul lambai 42 km thi aur 36 stations the. Cost optimize karne aur 8% se zyada Internal Rate of Return (IRR) ensure karne ke liye, route alignment ko revise kiya gaya, jismein Khamla Road aur Airport Area se guzarne wala original passage ko remove kar diya gaya. Final DPR November 2013 mein submit kiya gaya aur August 2014 mein central cabinet ne approve kiya. Project ka Phase 2, jiska estimated cost Rs 6,708 crore hai, state government ne approve kar diya hai, lekin DPR pending hai.
