A powerful earthquake struck Sumatra, Indonesia, at 6:30 am local time. Within 5-15 minutes, a tsunami hit Indonesia, and the Sri Lankan seismic monitoring station, although detecting the earthquake, did not anticipate a tsunami hitting the Sri Lankan coast. The Matara Express departed Colombo around 6:50 am, roughly 20 minutes after the Sumatra earthquake. Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes after the earthquake, at 8:45 am local time, the tsunami hit Sri Lanka's eastern coast. While authorities managed to halt 8 trains on the coastal line upon receiving reports of the tsunami, communication with the Matara Express was lost. Attempts to reach the train at Ambalangoda station were unsuccessful due to busy staff. Around 9:15 am, the tsunami struck Sri Lanka's southern coast, roughly 30 minutes after hitting the east coast. The Matara Express, unaware of the tsunami, continued on its journey towards Galle. Around 9:30 am, the train reached Peraliya, near Telwaththa, where the railway track was only 200 meters from the sea. Shortly after its arrival, the tsunami struck Peraliya. As the first wave flooded the coastline, the train driver stopped the train and sounded an alarm to warn the passengers, causing panic. Some passengers disembarked and took refuge on the opposite side of the tracks, while others remained inside the train. Within 10 minutes, a giant wave crashed into the train, derailing it and separating its carriages. Passengers who had taken refuge beside the train were crushed, and many were swept away by the current. The disaster resulted in the death of at least 1700 people, with some estimates reaching over 2000. A military helicopter finally located the Matara Express wreckage around 4:40 pm, roughly 7 hours after the incident.

Colombo ke Fort Station se lagabhag 1500 passengers ne tickets book kiye the, aur kai aur passengers bhi ticket ke bina train mein chadh gaye, jinme se bahut se apne families ke saath Galle mein chutti manaane ja rahe the. Sumatra, Indonesia mein subah 6:30 baje local time pe ek bahut bada earthquake aaya. 5-15 minute mein, tsunami Indonesia ko laga, aur Sri Lankan seismic monitoring station ne bhi earthquake ko detect kiya, lekin unhone Sri Lankan coast pe tsunami aane ka andaza nahi laga paya. Matara Express Colombo se subah 6:50 baje chali, Sumatra earthquake ke lagabhag 20 minute baad. Earthquake ke lagabhag 1 hour 45 minutes baad, subah 8:45 baje local time pe, tsunami Sri Lanka ke eastern coast pe aaya. Subah 9:15 baje ke aas-paas, tsunami Sri Lanka ke southern coast pe aaya, eastern coast pe aane ke lagabhag 30 minute baad. Matara Express, tsunami ke baare mein kuchh nahi jaante hue, Galle ki taraf apna safar jaari rakha. Subah 9:30 baje ke aas-paas, train Telwaththa ke paas Peraliya pahuchi, jahaan railway track samundar se sirf 200 meter dur tha. Train ke pahunchne ke kuchh der baad, tsunami Peraliya pe aaya. Jab pehli wave Peraliya ke coastline ko doobaya, tab train driver ne train ko rok diya aur passengers ko warn karne ke liye ek alarm bajaya, jisse darr aur ghabrahat faila. Kuchh passengers ne train se utar kar track ke opposite side pe aashray liya, samundar ki lahron se bachne ki ummeed mein. Aur kuchh passengers ne train ke andar hi rehna safe maana. 10 minute ke andar, ek bahut badi wave train pe aagya. Train track se hat gayi aur uske bogies alag ho gaye. Train ke paas aashray lene wale log train ke neeche dabb gaye, aur kai log current mein beh gaye. Is haadse mein kam se kam 1700 logon ki maut hui, aur kuchh estimates mein 2000 se bhi zyada logon ki maut batayi gayi. Haadse ke lagabhag 7 ghante baad, shaam 4:40 baje ke aas-paas, army ke ek helicopter ne Matara Express ke wreckage ko locate kiya.
