The plan aims to allow 15-coach locals to run on all stations beyond Thane by the end of the next fiscal year. Currently, only Dombivli and Kalyan stations have 15-coach local trains on the fast line, with only 22 trips. The growing number of residential complexes at affordable rates beyond Thane has increased passenger traffic. This has led to overcrowding on locals during peak hours. To address this, the Central Railway is exploring the feasibility of running 15-coach trains on the slow line. They are conducting a feasibility study for platform expansion on the slow line between Thane and Kalyan to accommodate these trains. Platform expansion projects between Kalyan-Asangaon and Kalyan-Badlapur are already approved, and proposals for expansion on Badlapur-Karjat and Asangaon-Kasara routes are in the pipeline and will be submitted for approval soon. Currently, the CSMT platform number seven can accommodate 15-coach trains. The Central Railway is considering expanding platforms five and six. In addition to platform expansion, the Central Railway has identified locations near Kurla and Kalwa car sheds to accommodate the additional 15-coach trains. Once platform expansion and other technical work is completed, the Central Railway will be able to convert at least 200 of their 12-coach trains into 15-coach trains, resulting in an increase of approximately 600 coaches. This will allow them to introduce an additional 50 trains.
