The incident occurred on May 9, 2017, when Chaturvedi, traveling from Katni to Durg with his family, reported the theft of ₹9.3 lakhs worth of belongings from his sleeper coach at around 2:30 AM. He filed a complaint with the Durg District Consumer Protection Commission, and after a series of appeals, the NCDRC ultimately ruled in his favor.
