is also investing heavily in expanding its infrastructure, with 459 projects in various stages of planning, approval, and construction, totaling 46,360 km and costing Rs. 7.18 lakh crore. These projects include new lines, gauge conversions, and doubling projects. In terms of safety, the Kavach system, deployed on 1465 Route km and 139 locomotives, is making significant progress on critical corridors like Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah. Indian Railways is also addressing human-wildlife conflicts by installing intrusion detection systems to prevent accidents with elephants, starting with 48 Route km on the Northeast Frontier Railway. Further, the average punctuality of Mail/Express train services has been 88.48% from 2020-21 to 2022-23. Indian Railways has also seen a 44.64% reduction in High-Speed Diesel (HSD) consumption for Diesel locomotives in 2021-22 compared to 2018-19, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability.
