Meter Gauge Chronicles. A journey in one of the last remaining mainline MG routes.
1. BRK-MLN MG Express being shunted on PF-1 of Bahraich. Meanwhile GD-BRK DEMU in background in background preparing for it's return journey.
2....
more... Machine, man and nature. Our train departing from the laidback settings of Manjhara Poorab.
3. Daily life and the daily commuters of the train. Most of the travellers boarded to reach their daily jobs in Risiya. Teachers, shopkeepers, nurses, policeman, peons, everyone on the train seemed to know each other.
4. A curious child looking out of the window. He kept asking his father about everything he saw. That's how I became a railfan, too.
5. Lines meeting and going deep into the Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary.
6, 7. Traversing through the Dudhwa national park.
8. Approaching the mighty Sharda barrage. It was quite scary sitting on the gate and recording while the river churned below.
9. A semaphore signal and a railway employee returning after setting the signal to Stop.
10. That one's obvious. The little devil snatched my samosa and hid below the train.
11. Our pairing train going back to Bahraich, running back into the Katarniaghat sanctuary after emerging from Dudhwa.
12. A busy Nanpara Junction bustling with activity. Train halted here for almost an hour. You can go out and buy things to eat. Or you can buy bread-pakoras or samosas being freshly made on the PF. The huge old tree gives the feels of old times and may remind you of Malgudi Days.
13. The said bread-pakora. Along with the samosa it was quite delicious, although a bit oily to my liking.
14. A IZN YDM-4 stands tall at it's base, Mailani.
15. The MG yard of Mailani. You can spot a wide variety of YDM-4s, GS and Vistadome tourist coaches here. Along with a few freight vans and brake vans.
16. Located a few meters away from the station, beyond the yard is the loco maintenance shed of Mailani, most probably managed by IZN.
17. Mailani yard with all the MG coaches and locos with the coaching depot visible in the background.
18. Where MG meets electrified BG. BRK-MLN MG Express on PF-3 while my next connecting train MLN-GKP Express standing on PF-1.
I did this journey on 31/06/2022. And except LKO-GD, the entire LKO-MLN-LJN journey was on a station bought general ticket. The train was clean, washrooms were clean and were fully functional. Although same can't be said for the electrical elements.
I was also quite surprised that people boarding the train from the stations mid-jungle, too traveled with valid tickets. They were helpful and interacting with them, learning about their slow lives in remote areas was an experience in itself.
Kumud.

1. BRK-MLN MG Express ko Bahraich ke PF-1 par dhakka de rahi hai. Tab tak background mein GD-BRK DEMU wapas ke safar ke liye taiyaar ho rahi hai.
2. Machine, man aur nature. Hamari train Manjhara Poorab ke relaxed surroundings se nikal rahi hai.
3. Train ke daily commuters aur unka daily life. Zyadatar yatri roz Risiya mein apni naukri pahunchne ke liye train mein chadhte hain. Teachers, shopkeepers, nurses, policeman, peons, sab kuch logon ne ek dusre ko pehchanne lagte the train mein.
4. Ek curious baccha window se bahar dekh raha hai. Usne apne pitaji se har cheez ke baare mein sawal karte dekha. Aur isi tareeke se main bhi ek railfan ban gaya.
5. Lines milte hain aur gehra jaate hain Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary mein.
6, 7. Dudhwa national park se guzarna.
8. Sharda barrage ke nazdik ja rahe hain. Gate par baith kar mujhe kaafi daraawna lag raha tha aur main record kar raha tha jab neeche dharati par dariya beh raha tha.
9. Ek semaphore signal aur ek railway employee signal ko "Stop" karne ke baad wapas aa raha hai.
10. Woh toh obvious hai. Chota shaitan ne meri samosa utha liya aur train ke neeche chhupa gaya.
11. Hamari saathee train Bahraich ki taraf laut rahi hai, Dudhwa se nikal kar wapas Katarniaghat sanctuary mein ja rahi hai.
12. Ek busy Nanpara Junction jahan kaafi activity hai. Train yahaan lagbhag ek ghante ke liye ruki thi. Tum bahar jaakar khaane ke cheezein le sakte ho. Ya toh fresh banaye gaye bread-pakoras ya samosas le sakte ho PF par. Woh bada purana ped purani duniya ki yaad dilata hai aur Malgudi Days ki yaad dila sakta hai.
13. Wohi kaha bread-pakora. Samosa ke saath yeh quite delicious tha, lekin mujhe thoda zyada oily laga.
14. IZN YDM-4 ko Mailani mein khada dekha ja raha hai.
15. Mailani ka MG yard. Yahaan aap ek wide variety of YDM-4s, GS aur Vistadome tourist coaches dekh sakte ho. Saath hi kuchh freight vans aur brake vans bhi.
16. Station se kuch meter door, yard ke parde ke uss paar Mailani ka loco maintenance shed hai, most probably IZN dwara manage kiya ja raha hoga.
17. Mailani yard jahaan saare MG coaches aur locos hain aur coaching depot background mein dikhayi deta hai.
18. Yahaan MG electrified BG se milti hai. BRK-MLN MG Express PF-3 par hai jabki mera agla connecting train MLN-GKP Express PF-1 par khadi hai.
Maine yeh safar 31/06/2022 ko kiya tha. Aur LKO-GD ke alawa, poora LKO-MLN-LJN safar station par kharidi gayi general ticket par tha. Train saaf thi, washrooms saaf the aur puri tarah se kaam kar rahe the. Halaanki electrical elements ke liye yeh keh nahi sakte.
Main bhi kaafi surprised tha ki jungle mein stations se train mein chadhne wale logon ke paas valid tickets the. Woh madadgar the aur unke saath interaction karke, unke slow jeene ki kahaaniyo ko sunke remote areas mein ek naya anubhav tha.
