The CRS has approved a speed limit of 100 km/h for the new line, and the Ministry of Railways will need to approve the line before passenger and freight trains can operate on it. The new line connects to the existing Varanasi-Chhapra railway line at the newly developed Ghat station and functions as a crossing station. The construction of the new line was initiated in 2016 by the Prime Minister, including the construction of a rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganges River.
